Elana and Spencer had a great idea for a GTKY location that was significant to them – at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. We busted through a barrage of security in order to get some shots inside the musuem. We had also not realized that it was a school holiday – so the place was swarming with kids! We had to be extra creative to capture photographs inside, but it was well worth it. The lighting was beautiful outside, so we ventured out back to get some awesome infrared shots with the blossoming trees and museum steps. We can’t wait to see them again for their wedding at the Crystal Tea Room in the end of June!

As many of you know, I love, love, love, love, LOVE film. I own about 10 different film cameras. Each has its own unique personality, style and verve to it. Recently I have been falling in love all over again with street photography. It is so raw and beautiful! The real live composition is constantly moving, evolving and is connected to everyone and everything around you. I recently purchased a twin lens reflex Mamiya medium format film camera from the 1970s. About two weeks ago Kathryn and I shot a test roll of Kodak Ektar 100 with my new baby. These photographs are not manipulated in any way they – are direct from our film scans. I hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as we enjoyed shooting them!

Brides Turning Away for Ring Ceremony

One small but large mistake I have been noticing takes place during the exchanging of the rings. This is one of the most special moments of the day, yet in most cases, nobody is able to see it! I have seen more than my fair share of couples who turn away from the guests when placing the rings on each other. This is not only bad for your photographs, but also for family and friends who end up viewing your back instead of this special exchange. Just keep a conscious effort to review this moment in your head a few days prior to the wedding, and even do a practice run during the rehearsal or at home the week prior to the real deal. Wedding of Caitlin & Alan Part 2– Mountain Branch Golf Course – Joppa, MD

Caitlin & Alan’s ceremony took place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception – it was wonderful and the church itself is amazing. It was a cold day, but Caitlin and Alan were really great and drove around the golf course on a cart while we were shooting. They even had a Reggae steel drum band for their cocktail hour! The reception was beautiful as well, and I love their friends and bridal party. Just non-stop fun. It is always awesome to be able to work with Caitlin and Alan, and I wish them nothing but the best!

Caitlin was a bridesmaid at Lyndsey and Keith’s wedding a few years back. She called right away when she got engaged – I was actually on my way to a church for a wedding that I was photographing when she called and asked my availability. She is awesome to work with. We had their GTKY session at an abandoned barn in Maryland that I found. They got ready at this hidden hotel called La Quinta; I mean, it was so damn new it was hard to find. Caitlin looked insanely beautiful on her big day!

Air Conditioning During Your Ceremony

Over the past few years, I have noticed a trend that I think needs to change for the comfort of future brides and their guests. Many of the ceremony locations seem to not have their staff arrive until right before the ushers are let in. They leave the air conditioning off until they open up. This is crazy! They should be turning the AC on a few hours prior to the ceremony. You can give your ceremony venue a call to ensure that this happens. You are a paying customer, and it is not fair to be exchanging your vows in a room that is 80+ degrees.

We continued the day by heading over to the boardwalk which was pretty demolished from a recent hurricane. Within 5 minutes we had torrential rain and winds, and had to run Jamie over to the venue in my car. She dried off for their ceremony at the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club. They had an amazing reception and one of my past couples, the awesome Maria & Chris were in attendance. Elite Entertainment provided the music and fun, which helped make it an awesome evening. I wish them nothing but the best.

1. Talented wedding filmmakers’ schedules fill up fast, so book early  Once you have scheduled a wedding date, you should waste no time in starting your search for your videographer. The most talented ones are booked heavily in advance, so make shopping for a videographer a top priority.

2. Ask friends and family for referrals  People will often talk about what went wrong at their wedding, and what vendors NOT to use, but most satisfied clients don’t talk enough about the amazing vendors! How do you find out about the good ones if no one is talking? Just ask! I’m sure once you start asking around, you’ll find a few people you know who were delighted with their wedding film.

3. Check out magazines and blogs  Don’t look for the big budget companies who advertise here! Rather; seek out the sections of the magazine or blog that are dedicated to showcasing the "real weddings." Magazines will showcase the photographer’s pictures from the wedding and also list other vendors who worked on the wedding, such as the videographer, and blogs can showcase both the video and photographs from the event. These "real wedding" features are handpicked by the editor and feature only the best and most unique vendors.

4. Search the internet  Once you have asked for referrals and checked out the "real weddings" featured by blogs and magazines that you love, you can always use the internet to help refine your search. You can use Google to search for reviews of the studios you are interested in learning more about, and third party sites like Wedding Wire or OneWed for third party ratings and reviews as well. Also, be sure to check out the Better Business Bureau for any possible problems or complaints against a studio you may be interested in using to produce your wedding film.

5. Personality, personality, personality  When you first have the opportunity to speak with the studio, the conversation should be fun, relaxed, and informative. Make sure you vibe with the studio from the first telephone call, all the way until the delivery of your film.

6. Review portfolios  When looking at a videographer’s collection of work, focus on finding videos that capture your attention emotionally. You should immediately fall in love with the work when you see it. Once you have narrowed your list to one or two videographers, ask each of them to show you a full wedding film. This will give you a much better idea as to what you can expect than a variety of samples from different weddings.

7. Ask plenty of questions: Whether you choose an in-person consultation or a telephone consultation, you have to take the opportunity to ask what is important to you. Each bride & groom will have a different set of concerns, but here are some important questions to start off with:

A. How long have you been in business?
B. What separates you from other videographers?
C. Do you use on camera lights?
D. Do you shoot in high definition, and will I receive my wedding on high definition Blu-ray  discs?
E. Do I get to choose music for my film?
F. What are the costs for the various levels of coverage?
G. What are the payment terms?

5 Reasons For the Bride and Groom to Meet Prior to the Ceremony

It is my goal to ensure that every single one of my brides has an amazing day. You should never feel rushed or pressured. There should be no excuse for you to miss your entire cocktail hour because you are creating photographs.
There are two situations in which you should have a ‘first meet’, where we will photograph you with your significant other prior to the ceremony. The first, if your ceremony and reception are being held at the same location. The second, if you have insufficient time between the end of a church ceremony and start of your reception.

*The tradition was born in the days of arranged marriages. Jamie and Alex had one of the hottest days for their GTKY session, so I am happy that their wedding day was a little more temperate. They also have the most amazing black lab – such a sweet, cute dog! The weather was a little iffy on their day, so we had the umbrellas prepped. They got ready at this really beautiful bed and breakfast not far from the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club. They had their first meet and then we went down to Spring Lake to create with them and the bridal party. Everyone was great; we had a lot of fun and as always, a ton of laughs with them.
